Japanese gaming giant Nintendo is currently enjoying the success of its hybrid console, the Nintendo Switch. Recently, several trademark applications of the company became available to the public. Based on these trademarks, it looks like the Japanese gaming giant is planning on something 'nostalgic' in the near future.

JapaneseNintendo reported the latest information about the trademark applications of Nintendo. It revealed that the list of trademarks filed by the company falls in a couple of categories. These are hardware and accessory names and video game names.
While some of the names are not surprising, others appear to come out of space. In other words, Nintendo is planning to offer something interesting for the gaming industry. Some of these include remakes of Wii games and the gaming hardware Wii.
Trademark applications for GameCube and Game Boy Advance projects are also present. Meanwhile, Nintendo also applied trademarks for some software. It includes "Paper Mario: The Origami King," and a new "Mario" RPG title for Nintendo Switch, which is poised to arrive in just a month. The most interesting trademark application is for "Excite Truck."
It is a Wii launch arcade racer title, which hints that Nintendo could be preparing to re-release the original title or to bring back the popular nostalgic series. Nintendo also filed for the trademark of the Wii U and GBA under the category machinery, equipment, and toys. The Japanese company also included the Wii U in educational/entertainment category.
The trademark filing could be Nintendo's way of simply protecting the IP of the hardware. The Japanese gaming giant already ported some of the Wii U titles to the Nintendo Switch, and it is possible that it might port remaining Wii U classic titles to the hybrid console soon. The company also filed a trademark application for the Mii.
It categorized the functionality of Mii as machinery and equipment and also filed it under education and entertainment. The Japanese company has not yet fully utilized the functionality of Mii. However, it is used on Nintendo Switch for personalization. Just like the Wii trademark application, it is possible that Nintendo simply would like to protect its IP for making this move.
The trademark applications filed by Nintendo could be the company's due diligence and a wise move to protect its IP. But some fans believe that the Japanese gaming giant could be up to something that they should look forward to. Nintendo has not yet made any official comment related to the trademark applications.
