The Warriors will not be part of the NBA season restart. Instead, the team will focus on adding to the three titles won in the 2010s and reports said head coach Steve Kerr is hunting for talents to complement the existing Dubs roster. All options will be considered but the priority will be on free agents.
Already, the former NBA champions are getting the due attention from would-be free agents and the chief task ahead of Kerr is to sign these talents, preferably at discounted prices. Like everyone else in the sporting world, the Warriors are feeling the pressure of the COVID-19 outbreak so shopping for Kerr has to be wise and practical.
According to NBC Sports, selling the team to NBA veterans looking to play competitively should be easy for Golden State. The immediate attraction for the prospective recruits is the chance of working with Kerr, who has made a name as one of the more successful bench tacticians in the league.
Add to that is the chance of collaborating with the formidable trio of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. The Warriors would be an easy magnet for NBA players who will be part of the open market when the season concludes.
These core talents boast of an impressive resume. As the report noted, the Warriors have a tradition of success and that is especially the case when Curry, Thompson, and Green are all in top form. On this note alone, it should be easy for GSW to get the players to gun for when the shopping season resumes.
Shams Charania of The Athletic said the Warriors could get a crack on the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft but the team will use the privilege as a tool to upgrade and reap the benefits, short-term, according to Sports Illustrated.
That should mean Kerr will be on the lookout to get the possible guy from the lot, rumored to be Anthony Edwards, and use to complete hiring targets designed to support the team's title contention next season.
"They're going to look hard at maybe packaging the pick ... And there's already some veteran free agents that are looking at the Warriors. They're looking at them gearing up and loading back up," Charania was reported as saying.
SI said Kerr has already made clear that his squad, disappointed by an early exit from the competition, intends to win more games when the next season starts and the end-goal is to play in the NBA Finals and win the series.
How things will unfold for the Warriors will partly depend if the team will win the draft lottery on August 25 with the likelihood of the Timberwolves and the Cavaliers angling to frustrate the Dubs.
