At first, it appeared the only problem that Arsenal FC was facing was the activation of the second year of David Luiz's contract. It was something that was overlooked and appeared to be a simple matter. However, there is a new twist in contract negotiations. It turns out that Luiz is now seeking a two-year deal to stay at Emirates Stadium.

According to the Daily Mail, these are the new terms that Luiz is seeking after the current season. Arsenal is reportedly not coy to the idea, thus leading to an impasse for now. However, there is still a chance that a two-year contract may be agreed upon. The only catch here is that the Brazilian may get a lower salary. So far, Luiz and his agent (Kia Joorabchian) have yet to air their comments if this would be the case.

Factoring in the current financial situation of clubs, shelling out bigger money at this point is unwise. Players are likely aware of that unless they are forecasting a better year in 2021. But with clear sign ahead that football games will be back to normal, the call of Luis is a bold one. Considering he is already 33-year-old, he may be thinking more about his security as far as being a player is concerned. Hence, if the Gunners offer a lower but reasonable package, there is a chance that this row will be settled soon.

"The contract situation has dragged on not because of the will of David or Arsenal to finalize but really the situation that has occurred with the pandemic," Joorabchian said to talkSPORT.

Joorabchian hinted that the financial situation over at Emirates Stadium is serious that most know. Hence, he is in a good position to understand that if ever Arsenal gives in to the two-year deal, it will not be a lucrative one. Had the one-year extension been activated, it would have guaranteed Luiz $148,000 a week for the next 12 months.

The situation of Luiz is unfortunate but something likely to be resolved soon. The Brazilian has gotten along with Arteta and vice versa. Further, the Spaniard knows how important Luiz is to the team. That is despite his forgettable return against Manchester City, something that critics are feasting on these days. But a player cannot be judged by one game alone. Considering the league was in forced hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many are expected to show signs of rust after being holed up indoors.
