Finally, Liverpool accomplished the inevitable. The Reds captured the Premier League title and in part thanks to Chelsea, which defeated the champions' nearest rival Manchester City, 2-1. The Jurgen Klopp side secured another win on Wednesday but it has to be in Stamford Bridge where the honor will be officially awarded.
City boss Pep Guardiola could have spoiled the fun for Klopp. The Spaniard could have mustered as many goals as his side and delay the celebration at Anfield. But the Blues came out to win and in the process played a role in ending the wait of 30 years for the Merseyside club.
Chelsea's win earned the Frank Lampard side three points and it has become impossible for City to even come close to a juggernaut force that the Reds have proven to be. Liverpool conquered the Champions League last year and it only made sense for the English club to gun for the Premier League crown.
Goal said Klopp's intention was clear at the onset. The Reds dominated the competition this season and picked up as many wins as they could. The champs also made sure that foes will be kept at a safe distance if only to ensure that the title will be in the bag the soonest.
In the 31 matches that Liverpool played in the league, opponents only managed to find the back of the net seven times. In all competition, the Reds only allowed 21 goals from the other side. For Klopp, the title drought of three decades in England has been too long and his side has decided to grab the chance in this term.
Klopp teared up when he realized that what he worked for has delivered the desired result. Liverpool won the prestigious silverware and the German and his crew can shoot even higher.
The Reds still have seven games to go and the math is telling the champions that breaking the 100-point ceiling is not a mission impossible.
Certainly, momentum is on the side of Klopp and his squad and the possibility is there for Liverpool to get past City's incredible run two seasons ago, according to Metro. The minimum expectation is for the league champion to ride high on the big win and continue with their dominance.
To be clear though, the Premier League title nearly slipped out of the Reds' hands. The coronavirus pandemic forced the suspension of football games and league officials even considered canceling the season.
It would have voided the efforts made by Klopp and his side but the games thankfully were resumed and Liverpool can finally celebrate on a win that has eluded legends of the club in the past 30 years.
