EXO's Kai is going to be the next member who will make a solo debut after SM Entertainment confirmed that he is working on a solo project.

According to a statement by SM Entertainment, Kai is already preparing for a solo album but they stopped short of giving a timeline on when it will be released.

The label said that they will make an announcement once the album has been completed and the promotion schedule is finalized.

Kai's solo debut follows the successful solo albums of Chen, Suho, Lay, and Baekhyun, who recently broke the 1 million mark in album sales with his comeback album Delight.

Baekhyun, reportedly, sold a total of 1,018,746 copies of his album as of June 30. The milestone is a big one for any artist because it has been 19 years since the feat was achieved by a solo artist. The last artist who sold more than one million albums was Kim Gun Mo in 2001, reported Soompi.

In an interview, Baekhyun thanked his fans for their support but asked them to focus first on themselves and only use their excess money to buy his albums. They seemed happy to support him despite his request.

EXO members are expected to work on a lot of solo projects this year because four of the members are anticipating to report for mandatory enlistment this year.

EXO leader Suho already reported to military training last May while Baekhyun is expected to follow suit in the following months. New dad Chen and Chanyeol are also expected to enlist this year since they belong to the '91 and '92 line.

Meanwhile, the eldest member, Xiumin is expected to be discharged and return to the music industry in December this year. D.O. will return shortly after in January 2021.

Once the members start their mandatory service, only the maknae line of Kai and Sehun will remain for EXO.

Before Chanyeol reports for his civic duty, however, he is expected to make a comeback with Sehun this summer for their subunit EXO-SC.

Chanyeol and Sehun will be releasing their first full album entitled 1 Billion Views. SM Entertainment has released teaser images for the new album which featured the duo in a fun and playful concept. It also seemed to be inspired by the popularity of YouTube videos.

EXO-SC has confirmed their comeback for July 13. As part of the promotions, they also released the short track MVs to Nothin and On Me
