As most know, Liverpool was one of the teams believed to be heading the race for the services of Timo Werner a couple of months ago. But all that changed when the Reds opted to pass up on the German striker, paving the way for Chelsea to win his services. Finances were seen as the main problem, but former Liverpool player Michael Owen Werner was worth the gamble. Now he feels the Reds will have to live with this fact that could come back to haunt them.

Owen points out that Roberto Firmino lacks support. The Reds do have Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino to help out, but the 40-year-old believes the two lack consistency. Owen says that the Reds opted not to pursue Werner, feeling the duo are more than enough to hold up and provide Firmino support.

"[Origi and Minamino] are there and they’re fixed but that doesn’t mean you can’t question whether they should be. Origi signing a new long-term deal, Liverpool were loyal to him, weren’t they?" Owen said to Premier League Productions.

Origi did make a good account of himself in the Champions League. For Owen, that may have been the reason why Liverpool opted to stick with him. Both Origi and Minamino signed fresh pacts with the Reds, although not all are confident that both players can provide much help for Jurgen Klopp's plans.

As far as Origi, it was evident in their game against Aston Villa. Though the Reds won 2-0, Origi struggled and was eventually spelled by Firmino. Hence, consistency could be a big question mark, and Owen could have a point unless the Belgian can prove him wrong.

"He’d done what he’d done [in the Champions League] and all of a sudden they thought he’s done that so you have to give them a new contract. That’s now prevented them from going and spending big money on a back-up striker," he said.

Werner would have made sense only that most felt he was a talent that would go to waste. The German is unlikely to settle for a backup role under Klopp. A change in the system would be needed to allow Werner to co-exist with top stars. Aside from Firmino, there is also Mo Salah and Sadio Mane. With an overcrowded bunch, Liverpool may not gain much success and spending heftily while they are at it. Like most teams, the Reds have financial problems of their own. This hints that getting Werner may not exactly be profitable unless they were going to lose at least one of their top stars.
