A few months ago, authorities have recorded several coronavirus cases between dogs and cats in China and the US. According to researchers, the pets contracted the virus from their owners who have tested positive of the virus as well.

Given this reason, experts are asking pet owners to always observe hygiene, especially when handling their pets. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean running water for 20 seconds before and after touching and cuddling pets. It is also not advisable to be in contact with furbabies especially if not feeling well, as advised by MSD Animal Health.

But what if your dog has contracted the virus despite following all these precautions? What are the things you should do? Here are some of those.

ISOLATE YOUR PET FROM EVERYONE IN YOUR FAMILY, EVEN TO YOUR OTHER PETS

If you are suspecting that your pet has already been infected by the virus, it is better to isolate your pooch or feline first from everyone else in your house to avoid transmission of the virus. You can either isolate him in a cage or a room, as shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During your isolation, it could help if you would also inform your other family members about the decision and the purpose of it. Everyone should understand what is going on to help keep the family safe.

NEVER BATH, WIPE OR GIVE YOUR PET ALCOHOL, BLEACH, OR DISINFECTANTS IN HOPES OF KILLING THE VIRUS

Disinfectants such as bleach and alcohol can cause an allergic reaction, poison, or worse, death to your pet. So make sure not to let them get in touch with these chemicals. Doing so could cause more harm than good. Let the experts handle the situation. Let them do their job.

DO NOT PANIC

Coronavirus has already caused millions of cases and thousands of death. And with how it currently has affected our world, it is indeed very difficult not to panic especially when our loved ones are already affected or at risk. But know that panicking won't help. So, focus on the things that are more important instead.

CALL YOUR PET'S VETERINARIAN FIRST FOR CONFIRMATION

One of the best things to do once you think your dog is already infected by the coronavirus is to ask an expert about the signs and the conditions of your pet. Call them and make sure to discuss all the details of your concern.

Doing so could help you understand the situation more. This could also allow you to discuss how your dog or cat can receive treatment and also keep yourself and your family safe.
