It seems like anyone can be the victim of cancel culture these days. Several celebrities including Maze Runner star Dylan O'Brien have been targeted in viral cancel party hashtags on Twitter in the past few months. Now the latest victim is Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Sebastian Stan, who is being cancelled on the social media platform. But does the Falcon and the Winter Soldier star really deserve the #sebastianstanisoverparty hashtag?
On Tuesday, July 14, the hashtag #sebastianstanisoverparty suddenly started trending on Twitter. With thousands of tweets claiming that Sebastian Stan is cancelled, the real story was finally revealed. One particular tweet explained that fans had tried to reach out to the Captain America: The Winter Soldier actor in an effort to get Stan to correct his girlfriend's actions. However, Stan had, reportedly, simply blocked them on Instagram.
According to one tweet, Sebastian Stan's girlfriend Alejandra Onieva had previously posted a decidedly racist image of herself wearing a Japanese kimono for an Asian-themed party on her Instagram account. Although the photo was posted back in 2018, fans were concerned that it has not been taken down by the model and decided to reach out to the Avengers: Endgame star. Interestingly, Stan and Onieva then proceeded to block the fans who have sent the messages. Needless to say, the action has led to people trending the hashtag #sebastianstanisoverparty.
Several of the tweets pointed out that Sebastian Stan has never spoken up about the Black Lives Matter movement and has even mocked the idea of wearing masks amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Some people stated that the Marvel Cinematic Universe star had confirmed that he and his girlfriend Alejandra Onieva are both racists for refusing to take down the photo. On the other hand, some believe that the whole thing is just a publicity stunt or that Stan simply doesn't care enough about the whole thing.
Sebastian Stan is set to return as Bucky Barnes in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which will also star Anthony Mackie who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson. Stan and Mackie have worked together since Captain America: The Winter Soldier and clearly have a certain bond after collaborating on several Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has not yet been given an official release date and was still being filmed when production was put on hold due to COVID-19. However, filming may resume soon and the new Marvel Cinematic Universe series is expected to premiere on Disney+ later this year.
