A new report claims that the 2020 iPhone 12 series would support both the sub-6 GHz and mmWave 5G networks. It also reveals that unlike the flagship series arriving this year, the 2021 iPhone line up would only support one 5G band. The report somehow implies that Apple has a different plan for the iPhone 13, which would presumably arrive sometime next year.
2021 iPhone 13 5G Specs
The latest report about the 5G specs of the forthcoming iPhone 12 series came from the Taiwan-based publication Digitimes and picked up by Macrumors. According to the report, the 2021 iPhone series, which would be presumably called iPhone 13, would only support a single 5G band. In other words, the iPhone 13 line up would support either the mmWave or the sub-6 GHz 5G band.
There is a high likelihood that Apple would release the iPhone 13 series with preferred 5G band support in various regions. Some regions would have the iPhone 13 that supports the mmWave 5G band, while others would have the series that supports the sub-6 GHz 5G band. Wccftech speculates that Apple might be doing this to cut the modem production costs for the 2021 iPhones. Also, while it is true that the 2020 iPhone 12 could support both mmWave and sub-6 GHz 5G bands, there are still other regions in the world where the faster mmWave band is not operational.
Other iPhone 13 Details
Earlier reports suggested that the iPhone 13 series could be the first flagship line up to ship without a charging port. A few months ago, several leaks surfaced online claiming that the Cupertino company might go for wireless charging, thereby dropping the Lightning port along the way. Others speculated that Apple would shift from Lightning port to USB-C port for the series' charging support.
Meanwhile, several industry insiders claimed that this year's iPhone flagship series would ship without the standard charger and wired EarPods. Many consumers and analysts find this alleged move from Apple impractical. Interestingly, following several claims about this new iPhone 12 packaging, another report claimed that Samsung is planning to do the same on its future smartphones.
Many believe that Apple's move of no longer, including a free charger and wired EarPods on its iPhones, is to cut the cost and lower the iPhone 12. Will this be the new norm for this year and in the future for smartphone release? It is worth mentioning that the 5G specs of the 2021 iPhone 13, as well as the new packaging of the iPhone 12 series, are still unconfirmed. It is smarter to take this information with a pinch of salt.
