Buying a new smartphone in these times is probably the last thing that anyone would consider. With most strapped for cash, consumers are prioritizing their essential needs and prefer to spend wisely. But buying a cost-friendly phone was the practice even before the COVID-19 pandemic. It was seen as a taint on Apple, who is known for offering expensively priced phones in the market. All that is except for the iPhone SE 2020.

For those who wanted an iPhone but were working on a budget, the iPhone SE 2020 was the device to choose from. Though the unit may lack some features compared to the flagship models, the Cupertino company maintained the right mix that made it a cost-friendly alternative. This move appeared to have aided in preventing a market decline by Apple.

According to Counterpoint Research data, there was a steep decline in the smartphone market during the second quarter of 2020. iPhone sales were down 23 percent, something that was hardly surprising. Had Apple not offering the iPhone SE 2020, things could have been worse. It made up 19 percent of Apple's sales in the United States, meaning there were still some people who went out to buy an iPhone - presumably, if it was at the right price. This is despite the device sporting an older design and a smaller screen.

In terms of sales, this gives Apple a bit of a reprieve. However, one belief that should be eliminated is that iPhone SE 2020 sales are hurting the numbers of the more expensive iPhone 12 models. This is not seen to be the case, mainly because the iPhones cater to different markets. To date, the iPhone 11 remains at the top of bulk sales for Apple looking at the previous quarter ending in June.

Finally, the phones which may want to be wary of the demand for the iPhone SE 2020 are Android-backed devices. Some consumers have shifted from Android to iOS, something that can be attributed to different factors. Hence, a budget-friendly iPhone seems to be doing well despite the hard times brought in by the coronavirus.

The iPhone SE 2020 officially came out last Apr. 15 and retailed for about $378. The phone sports a 4.7-inch Retina IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display and comes powered by Apple's A13 Bionic chip. The iPhone SE 2020 also comes with a 12 MP main camera and 7 MP front-facing shooter. Other features include a front-mounted fingerprint scanner and a non-removable Li-Ion 1,821 mAh battery.
