Several countries in Latin America remain among the 10 worst-affected nations and Brazil still has the most COVID-19 infections.

Brazil Passes 3.4 Million Cases

Brazil, the world's second worst-affected country, passed 3.4 million confirmed COVID-19 cases Tuesday.

It reported 47,784 additional coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours. There were 1,352 new fatalities linked to the disease.

As of Tuesday Brazil had 3,407,354 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 109,888 deaths.

Brazil Approves Johnson & Johnson Vaccine

Brazil's government gave approval for human clinical trials for a potential coronavirus vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson.

Three more human clinical trials are already being conducted in Brazil by other companies racing to pass quality and efficacy tests.

Over the past two months several pharmaceutical companies have selected Brazil for their potential COVID-19 vaccines. The country continues to battle its first wave of infections.

Official Says Mexico Cases in 'Sustained Decline'

The Mexican government's COVID-19 chief Hugo Lopez-Gatell said cases recorded in the country are on a "sustained decline" following a fall in fatalities linked to the virus.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said the country was on the road to winning its COVID-19 battle. However, some health experts continue to be concerned about the actual numbers infected.

There has been a decline in daily new infections but health analysts said Mexico remained the third worst-affected country in deaths linked to the novel coronavirus.

As of Tuesday Mexico had 531,239 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 57,774 fatalities.

More Than 8,000 New Cases in Colombia

In Colombia there were 8,328 new coronavirus infections reported bringing national infections to 476,660. There were 275 new fatalities bringing the national death toll to 15,372.

Colombia has experienced a steady rise in daily new cases over the past several weeks with the government moving to curb further transmissions.

As part of those efforts Colombia's President Ivan Duque extended the mandatory isolation that was supposed to end July 31.

Argentina Passes 300,000 Cases

Argentina's Health Ministry on Tuesday reported 6,840 new confirmed coronavirus cases bringing national infections to 305,953.

The country has seen an increase in new infections over the past two months. There have been increasing protests as people call on the government to take more action to strengthen the health system.

Other protests were for quarantine restrictions to be eased as the economy continues to suffer. Argentina has been in recession for about two years.
