The Society season 2 has been renewed on Netflix in July 2019, but the streaming service recently announced the series is not coming back for another installment. The cancelation of the mystery-teen drama series has something to do with the global health crisis.

On Friday, August 21, it was confirmed that The Society season 2 won't happen on Netflix anymore. According to a report from Deadline, the platform canceled this series, as well as another freshman teen drama I Am Not Okay With This.

The Society season 2 is, reportedly, planning to start filming in September and slated to premiere in late 2020. However, the plan was changed because of the pandemic. Sources claim the production uncertainty and budget increase due to the COVID-19 led to the cancelation decision.

In a statement, Netflix said they've made a difficult decision not to move forward with the second season of the two series. The platform added they're disappointed to have to make these decisions due to the uncertainties brought by the coronavirus pandemic and thanked all cast and crew.

Meanwhile, some cast members react to the news following the cancelation of The Society season 2. Kathryn Newton, in particular, has something to say about this subject. In an Instagram video, the actress, who plays Allie Pressman, said she is heartbroken over the news of cancellation.

Newton added that all of them wanted to go back and start working again, especially since everything was already written for The Society. She, then, said she loves the series so much, her character Allie, as well as all the cast.

The first season of the series ended with a massive cliffhanger and left a lot of unanswered questions. It remains to be seen whether or not Netflix would reverse the decision, like what they've done in the past with Sense8. Also, fans started a campaign, #SaveTheSociety, after the cancellation announcement.

However, nothing is guaranteed at the moment because of the global health crisis. For now, it seems like the streaming service is certain with their decision to cancel the series. There's also a question whether or not other platforms will pick out the show.

The Society is created by Chris Keyser and described as the modern take on Lord of the Flies. The series follows a group of teenagers learning to live on their own and run their own community after their town, West Ham, and its people disappear.

The mystery begins when the high school students returned from their canceled field trip and find that everyone else -- including their parents -- is gone. The town is surrounded by a dense forest and the world outside no longer exists.

All of them struggle to figure out what happened and how to get home. The teens come up with their own rules to survive with limited resources. Eventually, clashes between groups arise, causing rivalry and betrayal. Also, they form an alliance in order to survive.

In addition to Newtown, The Society also stars, Alex Fitzalan, Gideon Adlon, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Sean Berdy, Jacques Colimon, Grace Victoria Cox, Emilio Garcia Sanchez, Olivia DeJonge, and Olivia Nikkanen.
