Outlander season 6 hasn't started filming at the moment. The fifth installment concluded in May 2020, but the cast and crew weren't able to begin production immediately due to the current global health crisis. Now, it seems like fans need to wait for a little longer as filming is set to kick off early next year.
According to UK Casting News, Outlander season 6 will start filming in Scotland in January 2021. This is a clear indication that we won't be getting new episodes anytime soon on Starz. Previously, the series is expected to begin production later in the fall.
However, the schedule wasn't followed because of the pandemic. It would be challenging for everyone to work amidst the current global health crisis. There are a lot of things that needed to be considered and everyone must comply with the health guidelines and protocols.
The series comes with a lot of extras, as well as a large cast. It would be hard to film huge scenes while following the proper social distancing measures. Hence, there could be changes in how the story goes this time around. After all, the health and safety of everyone remain to be the top priority.
Following the announcement, fans reacted on Twitter to express their thoughts about the delayed production of Outlander season 6. One fan questions how much filming can be done in January in Scotland, adding that it's the "longest droughtlander EVER!!!"
Another one shared that if production kicks off in January, then the release date would be later than expected. The fan speculated that the sixth installment could arrive either October 2021 or later. Moreover, another user suggests that we could see the series returning in 2022.
For now, Starz has yet to confirm the news about Outlander season 6. But, the cast previously revealed how excited they are to go back working. During the PaleyFest in LA back in July, Caitriona Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser, said she's excited to see all of her crew.
The actress noted that she's sad everyone won't be able to get up and go to work. She, then, revealed that she's getting a haircut this season and will let Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) do it. Heughan, on the other hand, shared he's excited there'll be no more Zoom calls when they begin filming.
He added that he's excited where Jamie is heading off in Outlander season 6. His character is one of the most important parts of the series throughout its run. There are a lot of things in the book that they haven't covered as of yet. It's exciting to see where the story leads him moving forward.
