It has been nine years since fans get their hands on a Game of Thrones book, A Dance of Dragons. With the long waiting game, will George R.R. Martin still drop The Winds of Winter?

The 72-year-old author usually gives an update about the much-awaited sixth book installment. However, nothing has come to fruition yet.

Martin revealed he is finally making some progress in writing The Winds of Winter, thanks to the coronavirus lockdown. With his free time, he is now more focused on continuing the fan-favorite characters' storylinesMeawww noted.

He proudly shared he already finished a few chapters in just a week after being away in his cabin in the woods -- far away from all the city's distractions. So, where will the new book take the bookworms and Game of Thrones fans alike?

Multiple reports revealed The Winds of Winter would go farther north compared to the first five books. In comparison, A Dance with Dragons featured lesser stories than Martin wanted, while the new book would feature a lot of surprising revelations.

Martin promised to continue to the book series' original story. There would also be a lot of cliffhangers at the end of it.

The novelist also teased two big battles happening at the beginning of The Winds of Winter -- the war in the ice and at Meereen. Talking about the much-loved characters, Martin revealed they would be in "dark spaces."

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2016, he said there would be many dark chapters that the book would feature. As for the past 20 years that he had been teasing winter was coming, things would die, while "cold, ice and darkness" would fill the Game of Thrones' fictional world.

Inverse added Martin had big plans for Lady Stoneheart in The Winds of Winter after showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss didn't include her on the Game of Thrones TV series to avoid spoiling her storyline. The undead Catelyn Stark would have an important role in this part after her death at the Red Wedding with her son, Robb, killed by the Freys.

Martin continued one of the things he wanted to feature in The Winds of Winter was how the death Cately suffered would change the readers' perspective.

The Winds of Winter is set to be out this year. But, knowing how many release dates Martin has given over time, it remains to be seen if this will finally push through.
