Details about Sherlock season 5 remain scarce at the moment. The upcoming installment has been teased several times already, but there's no official update it will, indeed, happen. The fourth season concluded in 2017 and fans have been waiting since then.

Some rumors suggest that Sherlock season 5 won't happen anymore. The BBC series has been off-air for more than three years, which is a long gap. It has led fans to believe that that show has been canceled. However, the network hasn't officially disclosed the status of the fifth installment.

For now, it remains to be seen whether or not BBC will renew the series. Also, co-showrunner Steven Moffat said in a previous interview with Digital Spy that they haven't discussed what's next for the show since his fellow creator Mark Gatiss is doing other stuff.

In January 2020, Moffat hinted that the latest installment has been planned already. However, the final and official decision hasn't been made by the time season 4 premiered. Despite the uncertainties, the creators were looking into Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories for inspiration.

Meanwhile, some sources claim that Sherlock season 5 might be in pre-production. But then, there is no update from cast and crew that they're back to work. Since there's a lot of uncertainty, we can't expect the series returning anytime soon, with some speculating a 2022 or 2023 release schedule.

As for who's coming back in the fifth installment, Benedict Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes. He will be joined by Martin Freeman, who portrays Watson. Also, season 4 introduced Eurus Holmes (Sian Brooke), Sherlock's sister.

In an interview with Express, Brooke said she's willing to play the character again if given a chance. She noted that Eurus is someone she would love to revisit. The character is worth-exploring, given that she doesn't respond or behave the way others do.

There is a huge possibility that Eurus will appear in Sherlock season 5. In season 4, she returned to the confinements of her secure unit. It was revealed that she gets thrilled taunting her brother, and she's an expert manipulator. She also killed Sherlock's best friend, "Redbeard."

Sherlock and Watson, on the other hand, are still companions in the fourth installment and they'll remain partners in the next chapter. They're going to continue investigating more mysteries moving forward, and have their own stories, as well.

While waiting for Sherlock season 5, all four seasons of the series are available on Netflix.
