The in-display selfie camera on Samsung's Galaxy S30 series is no longer included in the package as the Korean tech company decides against it.
The much-touted in-display selfie camera will no longer be on the Galaxy S30 series, also known as the Galaxy S21 family, as Samsung has reportedly decided to forego it on the model for now. Reports say that the Korean tech company will offer the advanced camera technology on its Galaxy Z Fold 3 instead and will be the first Samsung device to have the technology.
Many smartphone manufacturers are searching for ways on how to implement an in-display selfie camera for their devices. The reason is simple. Most of them wanted to expand the screen to body ratio of their smartphones but then there is the problem of the selfie cameras which, until the in-display selfie camera concept, need holes for the front-facing camera. Samsung toyed with the idea and last April, a leaker revealed that the Korean tech company is working on an in-display selfie camera for its Galaxy S30 series. Recently, it appears that Samsung has scrapped the idea.
Other smartphone manufacturers have also come up with their own versions of in-display selfie camera on their devices, though many of them are only prototypes. Recently, China-based ZTE Corporation announced they are launching this year the ZTE Axon 20 which reportedly comes with an in-display selfie camera. The company claims that their design, coupled with the in-display technology, allowed them to utilize a real full-screen display as the phone's selfie camera is hidden under the screen. As for Samsung, even if it omitted the in-display selfie camera on its Galaxy S30 series (Galaxy S21 family), reports indicate the technology is included on Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Aside from citing low production yields of the in-display technology, the Korean tech company did not explain in full detail why it decided to omit the in-display selfie camera on its Galaxy S30 series. Instead, the series will sport a center-mounted punch-hole cutout similar to that of the Galaxy Note 20 series, the Galaxy S20 series, and the Galaxy Note 10 family. Samsung and ZTE are not the only smartphone manufacturers with in-display selfie camera aspirations for their smartphones. Another Chinese company, Xiaomi, confirmed it is also deep at work in designing and mass-producing smartphones that feature the technology.
It appears that it is not the end of the in-display selfie camera aspirations for Samsung though as the Korean electronics industry media outlet, The Elec, reported that the Galaxy Fold 3, which is due for release in 2021, has the technology. So even if the company omitted the in-display selfie camera on the Galaxy S30 series, another Samsung phone will offer it. In addition, Samsung may yet have major bragging rights if it offers an in-display selfie camera on a foldable device.
