BLACKPINK is known for breaking records. Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa had only been in the industry for less than five years, but they are already considered to be four of the most successful artists in the K-pop world.
As if that’s not enough, BLACKPINK also found success outside South Korea and throughout Asia. Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa made history as the first K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella in 2019. This just goes to show that the YG Entertainment girl group has reached worldwide success.
So, when BLACKPINK dropped its first-ever full album on Oct. 2, it was a sure hit. According to Hanteo Chart, Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa sold 589,300 copies in one day. This achievement sets a new all-time record for girl group album sales on the first day.
BLACKPINK actually broke their own record. The girls surpassed their previous record for “How You Like That,” which sold 204,300 copies in one day. A chart shows that Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa’s sales keep getting higher every comeback.
This is something that their agency needed at the moment. YG Entertainment can’t seem to catch a break from all the scandals. The company didn’t even have time to breathe after Seungri’s alleged involvement in the Burning Sun scandal, and then it was followed up with yet another drug case that involved iKON’s B.I.
YG Entertainment is known for producing strong K-pop groups, and iKON is one of them. With the legendary BIGBANG members G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, and Daesung still completing their mandatory military service last year, iKON had become the main revenue source of the label.
iKON had been in the K-pop industry since 2015. The group quickly garnered attention from fans after their debut as a seven-member group, B.I, Bobby, Jinhwan, Ju-ne, Yunhyeong, Donghyuk, and Chanwoo.
But, with B.I’s case and departure from iKON and YG Entertainment, analysts say that the company’s revenue will be greatly affected. They noted that as of 2018, iKON ranked fifth among K-pop artists and number one among YG-affiliated artists.
iKON had always been a stable group that brought a lot of success to YG Entertainment. But, BLACKPINK is currently taking the number one spot for their unstoppable success since their debut in 2016.
Last week, BLACKPINK drove fans into a frenzy with their latest hit “Lovesick Girls.” Jisoo, Jennie, Rose, and Lisa are expected to dominate the charts in the following weeks.
