His Dark Materials season 2 is officially coming back next month on HBO. There's no need to worry about its future as the majority of the latest installment has been filmed already. The series wasn't hugely impacted by the current global health crisis.
Recently, the show's official Twitter account confirmed that His Dark Materials season 2 will start dropping its new episodes starting on Monday, Oct. 16, on HBO. The air time remains unknown at the moment, but it might be airing in primetime just like in the first installment.
For UK-based viewers, the new season may premiere on Sunday, Nov. 15. However, there's no official confirmation of whether or not the mentioned date will be followed. But, considering what we've seen in the past, BBC tends to release new episodes the day before the official US release.
Meanwhile, His Dark Materials season 2 is based on the second book in the Philip Pullman novel series, The Subtle Knife. Just like most adaptations, there could be a few changes and alterations from the source material. Still, the central theme of the story remains intact.
There's an epic story coming for Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson) in the latest installment. They're going on a journey together and take on different threats along the way. The trailer suggests they'll be facing a lot of obstacles and will explore new different worlds.
In addition, His Dark Materials season 2 sees Lyra continues searching for her missing father as she dives deeper into the world of Dust. Also, the latest installment will introduce new characters: Dr. Mary Malone (Simone Kirby), Colonel John Parry (Andrew Scott), and Ruta Skadi (Jade Anouka).
More adventures and new daemons are coming, as well. We could also see shifting allegiance moving forward. Trust has been one of the key parts of the story and it will continue to play out as the latest installment progresses.
Meanwhile, the new season will have fewer episodes than season 1. The series decided to deliver seven episodes, instead of having a total of eight. The news was confirmed during the Comic-Con @ Home and was made due to the pandemic.
The good thing is that episode 8 is, reportedly, not essential in His Dark Materials season 2. It's a standalone story featuring Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), particularly what he's up to. The character won't be seen through most of the new season and the unaired episode might be revisited at some point.
