His Dark Materials season 2 is happening on HBO. The good news is that there's no need to worry about its future since the new episodes were filmed some time ago. The upcoming installment wasn't impacted by the current global health crisis.
Another bit of good news is that His Dark Materials season 2 will premiere before the year ends. It has been confirmed that the latest installment will be dropping its new episodes in November. No specific date has been set yet, but it could arrive in the early weeks of the month – just like season 1.
As for what we can expect, an epic story is coming featuring Lyra (Dafne Keen) and Will (Amir Wilson). The two go on a journey together and take on different threats along the way. Based on the trailer, they'll be facing several obstacles and explore different new worlds.
His Dark Materials season 2 is based on the novel The Subtle Knife. While there could be some changes in the series, the story will still stick to its original material. In the story, Lyra and Will meet in another world called Cittàgazze.
The upcoming installment sees Lyra diving deeper into the world of Dust as she continues searching for her missing father. Also, the new season will introduce new characters: Colonel John Parry (Andrew Scott), Dr. Mary Malone (Simone Kirby), and Ruta Skadi (Jade Anouka).
In addition, we could see more adventures, new "daemons," and more unexpected characters. There could be shifting allegiances, as well. Who to trust has been a key part of the story, and this will continue to play out as the series progresses.
Meanwhile, His Dark Materials season 2 will have fewer episodes than the first season. Instead of having a total of eight episodes, the series chose to air seven episodes this time around. This news was confirmed during the Comic-Con @ Home, and was made due to several factors – particularly the current global health crisis. The good thing is that episode 8 is reportedly not essential moving forward with the second novel.
The story revolves around Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), specifically what he's up to. The character will not be seen through most of His Dark Materials season 2. This unaired episode might be revisited at some point. Yet, everything depends on whether or not the third installment will be renewed.
