Outlander season 6 is not in production at the moment. Fans may need to wait for a while before seeing the cast and crew getting back to work. All signs suggest that the series won't be in production anytime soon, with the schedule being speculated next year.
Despite the lack of announcement, some were hoping to get some news about Outlander season 6 prior to its filming. However, it looks like they're keeping things under wrap. In fact, executive producer Maril Davis confirmed they won't share anything until they begin.
In her recent Twitter post, Davis made it clear that they haven't started filming for the upcoming installment as of yet. Just like what we've seen in the past, they won't be making any announcements until they officially kick off production.
There could be several reasons why they don't want to disclose any details this early. For instance, CarterMatt suggests they want to keep secret what the cast and crew are up to. Even if the series gets its source material from the book, they want to avoid possible spoilers being leaked.
Also, a lot of things happened this year due to the coronavirus outbreak. The entertainment industry has been hugely impacted, delaying the release of most shows. If Outlander season 6 pre-announced the production date and wasn't followed, it could cause a disappointment to some fans.
At the moment, the plan is to start filming when everyone is ready and safe to work for all parties involved. But, we could expect some changes in the story, considering the current global health crisis. Some scenes and extras might be reduced to keep everyone's safety.
Since production has been delayed, the release date of Outlander season 6 will be delayed, as well. If filming begins in early 2021, the new season may premiere in October of that year. However, if they encounter other setbacks, the series could return in 2022.
As for the story, Starz President CEO Chris Albrecht teased that Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) will be facing new challenges, adversaries, and adventures in the new season. The events that happened in the fourth installment will be carried out in the latest one.
The Fraser family heals as a whole and supports each other while facing their own struggles. Moreover, the upcoming installment may feature time travelers, as well as a new universe to explore. Outlander season 6 is based on the sixth book in Diana Gabaldon's series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
