A group of scientists from various universities tried to understand why fans loved the show and continue to do so, according to Science Times. The team, which consisted of mathematicians, physicists, and psychologists, collaborated to analyze the show's base material, A Song of Ice and Fire.
The scholars found two distinct points that set Game of Thrones far apart from other fantasy shows. They, reportedly, argued that George R.R. Martin keeps the fans hooked by killing the characters, even the central figures, in a "random pattern."
But, while they may all appear done in a random sequence, the scientists used a "mathematical approach" to map out the deaths. In doing so, they discovered that the series of deaths are "not as random as it seems."
The group of scientists, then, summed up that George R.R. Martin "carefully crafted" Game of Thrones. He, reportedly, succeeded in combining two "requirements" to achieve this standard.
Based on the analysis, the author piques the interest of the readers using a "random series of significant events." This encourages the audience to keep on reading to learn the next sequences.
While keeping them all hyped up, Martin seemingly ensures that all of the events are "natural." He appears to have them all "grounded" while their curiosity and attention continue to increase.
But, the scholars, later on, pointed out that the author "carefully structured" the plots in this way. He did this to retain the "realism," as well as the "unpredictability" of the course.
Despite the show's undoubted success, it still received a widespread backlash during its final season. Game of Thrones Season 8 became very "controversial" causing the show to hit its all-time low ratings. It even received a petition from 2 million fans across the globe to have it remade, according to Digital Spy.
Speaking to the publication, though, series star Joe Dempsie, who played the role of Robert Baratheon's bastard son, Gendry, said that the criticisms were "inevitable." While defending the show's final course, he argued that fans already theorized a lot of possible endings leading the writers and creators to take on a different path.
Radio Times reported, however, that the series creators admitted that they would do certain things "differently." Meanwhile, other series heads and executives were, reportedly, "defensive" about Game of Thrones' finale.
