It has been four years since Moana caught fans' hearts. But, will they still see her return in Moana 2? Despite the demand and the first film's success, Disney has yet to announce the movie sequel's coming. So, will it still see the light of the day?
The first film earned $248.7 million in the U.S. and Canada and a whopping 442.1 million in other countries, Devdiscourse noted. In total, it was a box office hit, grossing a staggering amount of $690.8 million.
It first reached the $500 million mark in 2017 and successfully hit the $600 million mark eventually, making it the fourth Walt Disney Animation Studios film that successfully got the two milestones. The first three movies that have attained this achievement are the 2013 Frozen, the 2014 Big Hero 6, and the 2016 Zootopia.
So, where Moana 2 will take fans if it pushes through? There are assumptions that it will continue where the previous movie left off.
At the end of the first film, Moana had finally returned home after having an epic adventure in the middle of the sea, acting as Wayfinder. Screenrant added that with the continuous fame of Dwayne Johnson, who voiced Maui in the first film, the return of the demigod might be featured, too.
Although Disney is still yet to confirm the making of Moana 2, its music creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, reportedly met with the studio about the possible sequel. The second film is said to focus on the Latina princess, but neither the 40-year-old actor-composer nor the production company confirms this plot.
With the second movie's uncertain future, it also remains to be seen when it will possibly hit the big screens. There are no even worlds if the film is already under development.
Walt Disney Animation Studios is mostly focusing on producing original animated features over doing sequels. However, there are times that it is doing this practice, giving Ralph Breaks the Internet and Frozen its own follow-up films.
With Moana's critical and commercial success, it is not far that it will receive the much-awaited Moana 2. In addition, with its fame and catchiest soundtracks, it may be soon in the making.
So, all fans have to do is wait for Disney's official announcement and take these assumptions with a grain of salt -- unless there is a confirmation.
