Matthew Perry gave a very special Friends reunion special update that made fans celebrate. In a tweet, the 51-year-old star revealed the production of the much-awaited reunion is finally happening in 2021.

Perry said the Friends reunion special was rescheduled for the beginning of March, adding it looked like they would all be busy next year. Despite the possible full schedule coming, the comedian had no complaints and added that's the way he liked it.

In July, David Schwimmer told Jimmy Fallon they were hoping to begin the show filming this year, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the virus' threat, they still had to wait until everything became safe, per CNN.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, hit series co-creator Marta Kauffman also said they wanted to have a live audience for the special show. The series had been unscripted, so it needed a live audience because it had been a huge part of Friends. He vowed to follow the social distancing protocol as they couldn't do the show without them.

According to BBC, the Friends reunion special was originally set to start filming in August. Fans would once again see Perry, Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, and Matt LeBlanc together on the small screen.

The show started dominating the small screens on its release in 1994. It had been on the air for ten years and ended in 2004. Watched by 52.2 million viewers in the U.S. alone, its finale made history for being the most-watched TV episode of the 2000s.

Rumors about the reunion began when Aniston shared a cast photo last year as her debut post on Instagram. It only took the 51-year-old star five hours and 16 minutes to earn a million followers then.

The Friends reunion special's filming will take place on its original soundstage, Stage 24, on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. It will air on HBO's streaming service, HBO Max, although its release date is yet to be announced.

Aside from the upcoming reunion, the HBO Max drops all the 236 episodes of the series. HBO Max chief content officer Kevin Reilly said, via RadioTimes, the special show would capture the spirit that would reunite even the new and original fans.
