Sylvester Stallone is joining the rest of the cast in the upcoming The Suicide Squad 2. This news was confirmed by writer and director James Gunn on Instagram. Fans were delighted by the news, with some wondering which character he's going to play in the movie.
The Suicide Squad 2 brings a lot of familiar faces from the first movie, but it will also introduce new characters onboard. Recently, Gunn shared on Instagram a photo of himself with Stallone confirming that the actor has just filmed his part.
Similarly, Stallone posted a now-deleted Instagram video noting he's on the way to shoot with Gunn and described the movie "spectacular." However, the actor didn't reveal what would be his role, prompting fans to speculate his role in the film.
Some believe Stallone will be playing the role of Rick Flag, Sr. In the comics, the character was once the head of original Task Force X and he's known for his skills as a killer and trainer. Since war is the theme of The Suicide Squad 2, fans on Reddit think Flag Sr. is the target of a rescue operation of the gang.
However, others speculated that Stallone will only make a short cameo in the film -- perhaps a hero who didn't survive that long. There is also a conversation on Reddit that his character will have a quick and hilarious death - like how Brad Pitt's character died on Deadpool.
Another speculation noted that the actor won't appear in the movie and will just be the voiceover of King Shark. But, aside from Stallone, The Suicide Squad 2 brings new supervillains played by big names. For instance, John Cena is set to play Peacemaker, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, and Nathan Fillion as T.D.K.
Alicia Braga will be playing Sol Soria, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Storm Reid as Tyla, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Michael Rooker as Savant, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Flula Borg as Javelin, Mayling Ng as Mongal, and Taika Waititi in a surprise role.
As for who's returning, Jai Courtney and Margot Robbie are coming back as Captain Boomerang and Harley Quinn, respectively. Viola Davis will also reprise her Amanda Waller, while Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg. However, not everyone from the first movie is returning, with Will Smith not coming back as Deadshot.
The Suicide Squad 2 is coming to theaters on August 6, 2021.
