The "Jetman" - French daredevil Vince Reffet - has died in a training accident in Dubai.

The 36-year-old was killed after an accident Tuesday, according to a just released statement from his team.

Jetman Dubai, a group formed by Reffet and Swiss adventurer Yves Rossy, said that the incident happened at their training grounds in the desert just outside the city.

"Vince was a talented athlete and a much-loved and respected member of our team. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those who knew and worked with him," Jetman Dubai said in its statement.

Reffet and his team gained popularity after videos of their stunts went viral on social media. In 2015, Reffet and his team soared over Dubai and flew around the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, equipped with carbon-Kevlar wings and a jetpack.

The jetpack allows the daredevils to travel at maximum speeds of around 250 mph. In one stunt, the team flew beside a giant Emirates Airbus A380 in Dubai, wowing onlookers and inspiring other extreme athletes online. Reffet previously described the sensation as akin to flying "like a bird."

Aviation authorities, including the country's General Civil Aviation Authority, have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Jetman Dubai also did not give any further details about what had happened and only said Reffet died "during training."

Reffet is part of a high-flying team that does aerial stunts to promote various brands and their own jetpack technologies. The Frenchman was a professional skydiver and base jumper.

He holds the record for the highest base jump after he leaped off the 2,716 foot-tall Burj Khalifa. He also holds various skydiving gold medals.

Apart from flying around with his jetpack, Reffet also became a worldwide sensation after he and fellow Frenchman, Fred Fugen, successfully landed on a moving plane after jumping from a mountain with nothing but wingsuits.
