The Last Kingdom season 5 continues to follow Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon), attempting to claim back his homeland. The Anglo-Saxon series will also continue to see what the future holds for him and his former lover, Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), who went on a dark turn in season 4.

Uhtred and Aethelflaed's relationship blossomed in the fourth installment. However, they had to keep it a secret as they knew it wouldn't be welcomed in the latter's Saxon family. They tried to keep things going between them, but everything could change in The Last Kingdom season 5.

When people started to catch Uhtred and Aethelflaed's relationship, the two decided to step back and take things slow. Uhtred was one of the major reasons why Aethelflaed was able to defeat the Danes in the Battle of Tettenhall. This seemed to be a good move, yet they were further tested.

Initially, Uhtred was chosen to be the ruler of Merica. However, he knew Aethelflaed wanted the position and urged her to take charge. In the end, she took over the position and vowed to remain "chaste" as people doubt to see a woman taking charge.

Aethelflaed promised to avoid being romantically involved with any man and swore to protect her people to earn their trust. She decided to break up and cut ties with Uhtred and went on a darker path later on. Fans wonder whether they'll rekindle their romance in The Last Kingdom season 5.

It remains to be seen what's next for them, but their relationship might be tainted forever after Aethelflaed seemingly betrayed Uhtred. She, along with her King Edward (Timothy Innes), agreed that Viking warlord Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) could take the daughter of Uhtred, Stiorra (Ruby Hartley), with him.

The siblings didn't inform Uhtred about this matter, leaving him surprised. Fans were disappointed with Aethelflaed's actions, considering the risks he has taken for her. Some believe that this will continue in The Last Kingdom season 5, and betrayal is at the forefront of the story.

Also, others speculated that Aethelflaed became jealous of Uhtred since the people recognize him being fit as a ruler of Mercia. There's also a chance she could turn on him again as long as he won't stand in her way being the leader. Yet, they may put their relationship aside to protect their people.

While waiting for what's coming for Uhtred and Aethelflaed in The Last Kingdom season 5, viewers can watch the first four seasons on Netflix.
