Apple's iPhone 12 Pro Max has a unique L-shaped battery and a larger camera module as revealed in the latest iFixit teardown.

In what many consider the last teardown in the iPhone 12 series, iFixit reveals that iPhone 12 Pro Max has a unique L-shaped battery and also a bigger camera module. These features make this model different from other models within the iPhone 12 family. Unlike the iPhone 12, the Pro, and mini, the camera system on the Pro Max is larger, making it possible for this model to have a slightly better low-light performance.

As iFixit showed in past teardowns, Apple's iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 mini all have more rectangular-shaped batteries. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has an L-shaped battery, similar to what is used by the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Rumors say that the three other models within the iPhone 12 family did not have rectangular-shaped batteries because Apple was trying to offset the costs it incurred in integrating 5G technology into the iPhone 12 series.

In the latest iFixit teardown video, the first thing you will notice in the opened iPhone 12 Pro Max is its L-shaped battery. According to industry observers, the L-shaped battery of the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the most capacious as compared to other models within the iPhone 12 series, with 14.13 Wh of power as compared to the 10.78Wh of the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro. Nevertheless, many noted that the new battery is still short of the 15.04 Wh that the iPhone 11 Pro Max uses.

The L-shaped battery on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is not the only aspect that amazed users in the latest iFixit teardown. What impressed observers the most, however, is the new iPhone's camera package. For one, it is a lot bigger compared to that used in the iPhone 12, mainly because of its sensor.

As the iFixit teardown x-ray of the camera package reveals, the standard wide camera of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is the bottom left in the cluster of three cameras, showcases a 47% bigger 12-megapixel sensor as compared to the regular iPhone 12. This allows the iPhone 12 Pro Max camera to absorb more light, which results in superior photos.

The iFixit teardown video also showed the four magnets surrounding the camera cluster on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, indicating the presence of Apple's latest technology, the sensor-shift image stabilization system, which moves the phone's sensor thousands of time each second to handle the most violent hand shakes. The iFixit technical team noted that many other smartphones use lens-based optical image stabilization (OIS) system to deal with the jitters. In the case of Apple's iPhone 12 Pro Max, the company either decided to use its own technology because it was better, or perhaps OIS technology is not enough to stabilize the bigger version of the new phone's f/1.6 lens.
