A company in Nova Scotia says it can solve the problems with landfills as governments try to reduce waste.

Chester, Nova Scotia's Sustane Technologies, Inc. built a warehouse beside a community landfill. The company is looking to continue mining community landfills around the world to help reduce community waste.

Sustane Technologies said it can turn household waste into diesel fuel and biomass pellets and can make up to 90% of rubbish reusable.

Chief executive Peter Vinall said the company "can reduce the cost of living with landfills and we can eliminate the environmental liability of landfills."

Its process involves 15 stages of separation and cleaning to ensure recyclable material is separated without burning any waste.

In many recycling processes combustion is normal. However, Sustane Technologies said it doesn't burn waste and its system prevents the creation of pollutants.

The pellets from Sustane Technologies' recycling are sold as an industrial heat source.

In Canada, Nova Scotia is among the provinces that bans the use of plastics. The country has been trying to reduce plastic waste - but the debate on segmentation continues.

As Canada's government continues to find ways to reduce waste companies are adapting, too.

This week, Keurig Dr Pepper Canada unveiled the K-Mini Plus and Keurig K-Mini coffee makers that are made with recycled plastic. The recycled percentage of the coffee packages is up to at least 30% and 20%, respectively.

The two coffee makers were launched in partnership with Montreal-based second life plastic transformation company Lavergne.

Keurig Dr Pepper Canada is closer to its sustainability goal of using up to 30% PCR content within its packaging within the next five years.

Meanwhile, the debate on which types of plastic should be included in Canada's plastic ban continues among analysts and environment experts.

Environment activist and former University of British Columbia professor David Suzuki said the Canadia plastic ban should include beverage containers.

Suzuki said there is a lot of energy use in the creation of water bottles and other plastic containers. Concentration should be on how the country reduces plastic packaging.
