Tiktok knocks off Facebook from its reign to become the most-downloaded app in 2020 as global app spending reaches an astounding $112B.

A new report today shows that Facebook no longer reigns as the most-downloaded app after Tiktok knocked off the social media platform from its pedestal. The App Annie report, which highlights mobile app trends in 2020, showed that the short-form video-sharing app knocked Facebook off from its position as the most-downloaded app. The report also revealed that Android and iOS downloads may breach the 130 billion mark with global app spending expected to reach $112 billion by the end of this year.

The momentum of Tiktok grew significantly in the last couple of years and this year, it maintained that trend to outpace Facebook as the most-downloaded app. The App Annie report, as revealed by American business magazine Fast Company, showed that TikTok hopped up three places in the rankings to become the most in-demand mobile app, knocking off the social media platform giant Facebook. Interestingly, the Trump administration appears to have abandoned its effort in attempting to force TikTok to sell off its operations in the US. It is unclear whether the report about TikTok knocking off Facebook to become the most-downloaded app in 2020 has anything to do with the government's waning interest in forcing TikTok to sell its US operations. The report by App Annie also showed that TikTok likewise jumped 15 spots to become the second-highest among the revenue-generating apps just behind Tinder for "consumer spending." The App Annie report, however, does not mean that Tiktok has completely knocked Facebook in all aspects as the social media platform giant's apps still occupy the top four slots when it comes to the number of active users per month. Tiktok only surpassed Facebook in terms of the most-downloaded app in 2020.

Aside from showing data that revealed Tiktok overtook Facebook and became the most-downloaded app in 2020, the App Annie report also examined other trends affecting the mobile world for 2020. According to the report, the global revenue for Android and iOS increased by 25% for the year and hit around $112 billion. The report also revealed that of the total app sales in and in-purchase revenues, games comprised 71%, which represents the majority of the $112 billion in sales for the year. The report also stated that iOS apps made up 65% of that total even if data shows the vast majority of downloads involved Android apps. Industry analysts say that the record-breaking 130 billion app downloads this year shows a 10% increase compared to last year. Aside from games, other downloads involve apps that focus on shopping, streaming, finance, and business.
