With Manchester United tied with reigning title-holder Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table, the Red Devils can aspire for the silverware this season. However, the idea has yet to cross the mind of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, saying that aiming that high would be premature.
The Red Devils posted consecutive victories in the past 10 matches and the only break with the defeat against Manchester City in the EFL Cup semifinal game. However, Solskjaer would like to believe that his squad is on momentum and he intends to keep that force running.
The Norwegian said talking about United winning the Premier League trophy this season is too early. Solskjaer's side is leading the pack with Liverpool but a title win is not yet in the cards. The boss said it is important for the squad to continue winning and every game matters.
"We're not even halfway through the season and every game in the Premier League is a challenge, they're tests," the United manager explained, and per the report by Goal.
He stressed that bouncing back after the loss to City should be the focus. He warned that losing games will quickly change the narrative for United. It could be that the club is among the favorites now but suffering defeats in the coming games will easily change the course. Solskjaer warned that once the club starts sliding, no one will remember they were once on top.
United will clash against Burnley on Tuesday and come Sunday, the next match assignment will pit the squad with the champions - Liverpool. How the fixtures will turn out for the Red Devils will determine the next chatter about the squad.
Solskjaer's side scoring two wins and notably against Jurgen Klopp's team will fuel further talks favorable to United. The club will overtake the Reds and they will gain the steam to go for a title run.
However, Rio Ferdinand is quick to remind it's unwise to jump too soon. The United icon advised that it's best for the Red Devils to win first the game against Burnley as doing so will put the pressure on Liverpool.
It will be a crucial week for United and Ferdinand said the players need to know what really matters.
"As quick as you can get there, you can fall away ... Ole's experienced enough not to get too carried away. That's living life at big clubs ... The highs are high, and the lows are lower than a snake's belly," Manchester Evening News reported the pundit as saying.
Ferdinand added he is holding back on his forecast for now as he agreed with Solskjaer that characterizing United as a serious title contender might be too early to tell.
