Chris Eubank Jr. did not see action in 2020 and the 31-year-old WBA interim middleweight champion wants to do so with a bang. He is now under the watch of a new promoter in Kalle Sauerland and they already have an ambitious opponent ahead – Gennady Golovkin.

"Golovkin is the No 1 target. GGG is a legend but he's there for the taking," Sauerland said to Sky Sports.

Originally, Eubank and Golovkin should have locked horns in 2016. That fight fizzled with the Briton reportedly difficult to handle according to former handler Eddie Hearn. But now, Sauerland feels the time is right and that it should be held in the United Kingdom.

"This is the right time to make the fight. It's a great fight. It's a fight you could do in the UK. Golovkin has fought here before [against Kell Brook in 2016]. In normal times the logical place to make this fight would be the UK, maybe at Brighton's football stadium [in Eubank Jr's home city]. The timing is now right. Golovkin is at the top of our list,” the Team Sauerland promoter quipped.

However, there are questions in the air on the type of condition that “NextGen” is in. But a recent update claims that Eubank has been keeping himself in shape, working out in Florida with Roy Jones Jr.

While this should be good news to Eubank fans, his preference to stage his next fight in the UK is not looking good for now. The coronavirus pandemic is acting up again and the nation has been placed on lockdown.

Hence, if Eubank is determined to face Golvkin next then he may need to wait. Also, it remains to be seen if the Kazakhstan is interested in facing the Brit as his next opponent.

So far, Sauerland has not mentioned other boxers who could face Eubank Jr. Regardless, he is confident that finding an opponent will not be hard. He considered the 31-year-old a top five UK name so finding a worthy opponent aside from GGG should not be that difficult.

"He is a top five UK name. Look at his social media following or the reaction his name causes. He is Marmite, not everyone loves him! He may hang out with superstars but you won't find a harder working boxer. He has a winner's attitude,” Sauerland batted.

Eubank is on a three-fight winning streak. He last faced Matt Korobov in December 2019 and won via TKO when the Russian was unable to continue due to a shoulder injury.
