Meghan Markle had two rescue dogs before she met Prince Harry, but while Guy, a Beagle, is back with the Sussexes in their Montecito home, Bogart, a Labrador-Shepherd mix, has remained in Canada where the animal was rehomed with another family.

According to reports, Meghan could not take Bogart back because the dog never warmed up to Prince Harry. Sources said that Meghan truly adored the dog, but Harry struggled to connect with the animal. Thus, the Duchess of Sussex decided to rehome him, while bringing Guy along, when she left Toronto to move to the United Kingdom.

Initially, reports stated that Bogart was too old to fly across the pond, hence giving the dog to one of her friends in Canada. But when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to California in March 2020, Meghan still didn't take the rescue back.

Her staff was confused by the decision knowing how much Meghan loved her dogs as Bogart was her first rescue pet. The Duchess of Sussex revealed that she was convinced of adopting the mix breed after she bumped into Ellen DeGeneres at the dog shelter.

However, royal experts said that Harry's experiences with Bogart reminded them of Princess Diana's experiences with Prince Charles' Labrador, Harvey. Royal biographer Penny Junor wrote in the book The Firm that Charles had to send the dog to one of his advisers because it made Princess Diana unhappy. She also allegedly complained about the attention her husband showered to the "smelly" pooch.

Diana apparently had no disregard for something that was part of Charles' past. She was insistent, almost to the point of having tantrums, the Harvey had to go.

Junor's revelations were also backed by another royal author, Sally Bedell Smith, who said Diana resented anything or anyone that was associated with Charles' life before they met. It wasn't just dogs that were driven out but also staff members whom Diana didn't like.

The royal experts said that Charles gave in to his wife's demands because he thought this would help their marriage. But after five unhappy years together, the Prince and Princess of Wales gave up on each other.

Meanwhile, Meghan and Harry eventually adopted another rescue, a black Labrador, in London and named the dog Pula, who was featured in the couple's family Christmas card for 2020. The Duchess of Sussex would also become the patron of London's Mayhew Animal Home that facilitates pet adoption. She still remains a patron despite quitting her royal job, alongside Harry.
