Inspectors from the World Health Organization paid a visit to a laboratory in China's Wuhan City Wednesday alleged by some in the U.S. to be the source of the coronavirus.

Several American officials in the Trump administration alsorepeatedly alleged that the particular laboratory was where the virus was "made."

Last year, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that there was "significant evidence" to prove that the virus was manufactured inside a lab. He alleged that the lab was located in Wuhan. Trump also made the same accusation during his term.

The inspectors dropped by the Wuhan Virology Institute as part of their investigation into the origins of the virus. Apart from the lab, the team had visited several other coronavirus-related areas, including the country's animal disease control center.

On Sunday, the team visited the wet market in Wuhan where one of the first clusters of infections had emerged in late 2019.

The particular stop is one of the most anticipated as it could confirm or debunk the conspiracy theories being circulated on social media.

One of those theories was that the coronavirus may have been accidentally leaded from the biosafety lab in Wuhan, although no sufficient evidence has been presented to back it back. The lab's director has denied all of the claims.

After months of negotiations and global pressure, China finally allowed a team of experts to travel to the country to help determine the origins of the virus. China had delayed the sensitive mission several times early on in the pandemic.

The team arrived at the laboratory on Wednesday morning in a convoy of vehicles. One of the vehicles stopped briefly to address reporters. Team member Peter Daszak said that they are looking forward to a "productive day" during their visit.

The team of scientists is in China to investigate various theories on how exactly the virus had jumped from animals to humans. The majority of the scientific community believes that the COVID-19 may have originated from bats before it was transmitted to another animal and then humans.

State-owned broadcaster CGTN said that the team was visiting the laboratory to "exchange ideas" and for "international scientific cooperation" in combating the spread of the disease.
