An independent commission that the U.S. Congress will establish for the investigation of the Jan. 6 attack at the U.S. Capitol will be based on a panel created to study the origins of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

A Mirror of 9/11?

According to a note to House members from U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the new commission will be modelled after the one that was set up after four coordinated terrorist attacks were launched against the United States in 2001.

Pelosi's note said the independent commission will be set up "to protect our security." She added that the team is expected to "investigate and report on the facts and causes" of the shocking "domestic terrorist attack."

Pelosi has repeatedly urged Congress over the past few weeks to come up with a commission for the investigation, but the effort has yet to pass both chambers on Congress before it lands on the new president's desk.

Capitol Security

The Capitol attack took place on the day that the House Representatives met up to confirm the Electoral College victory of now-President Joe Biden.

Multiple questions have been raised regarding the rioters' storming of the U.S. legislature and how they were able to overwhelm police barricades and breach the Capitol's security.

In security footage that from the Jan. 6 violence, rioters can be seen fearlessly approaching police, indicating a coordinated attack that resulted in the deaths of five people.

Trump Impeachment

The chaotic turn of events also prompted House Democrats to initiate the impeachment of former president Donald Trump for inciting the attack. However, Trump's impeachment trial ended in the U.S. Senate in his acquittal.

Trump's legal team has denied allegations that the former U.S. president incited the mob.
