Gina Carano is no longer returning as Cara Dune in Disney+'s first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. The actress was fired just recently due to a series of controversial social media posts. Lucasfilm also confirmed that she won't be part of the show and other Star Wars projects in the future.
Previously, a representative from Lucasfilm confirmed that Carano is not employed by the company and there are no plans for her to be part of The Mandalorian. The dismissal of the actress came on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, after her social media posts were found to be anti-Semitic and transphobic.
Carano has been playing Cara Dune since the first installment space series. She was introduced in the episode "Sanctuary" and has since become one of the fan-favorites. There is also a plan to give the character a spin-off -- but that won't push through anymore due to the recent events.
In a recent interview, Carano claimed that she learned her dismissal from the series through social media. The actress added that she wasn't part of the Disney+ press for the second season as she decided not to use the apology statement of the streamer for her controversial posts.
Now, Cara Dune's future in The Mandalorian is uncertain after Carano's exit. Recent reports noted that the character will be recast at some point in the future. While she wasn't set to appear in another spin-off The Book of Boba Fett, she'll, reportedly, be replaced with a new actress.
Shortly after that, fans speculate as to who could be the next Cara Dune. Lucy Lawless is one of the most popular picks and has been a viable contender following Carano's firing. Once Upon a Time actress Lana Parrilla is also a candidate -- though the decision is still up to Lucasfilm.
Meanwhile, Hasbro reportedly discontinued making more Cara Dune action figures after Carano's exit in The Mandalorian. The toy company hasn't yet commented regarding the matter, but BigBadToyStore cancelled pre-orders of the item as no more would be made.
In another report, only a few details were known about the third installment of The Mandalorian. No official release date has been set since production is yet to begin when The Book of Boba Fett wraps up. The spin-off has started production back in December 2020.
The next part of The Mandalorian is expected to begin filming at some point in 2021, leading to a 2022 premiere schedule.
