Fans and followers of BLACKPINK and member Jisoo continue to wait for the arrival of her highly anticipated drama, Snowdrop. While the exact details of the premiere remain undisclosed, reports said that it will likely reach the small screens in June.
As the preparation and production persist these past few weeks, controversies surrounding the show have since emerged. Koreaboo even recently reported that netizens are now urging for the cancellation of the show.
Fan union DC Gallery released a "lengthy protest letter" earlier this week, calling for the dissolution of the drama's contract with JTBC. The statements in the piece seemingly "denotes all the current issues" that many people have taken up with Snowdrop.
As pointed out, the union has been "strongly requesting" the ultimate cancellation of the upcoming series because of the lack of clear explanation. Instead of receiving clarifications from the production heads and the network, the official statement, which dropped on Friday, reportedly, "merely gave vague excuses."
The publication recalled that the controversy focuses on the allegations that the content of the show features "distortion of history." As explained, this all relates to the "highly sensitive" issue of the Democratic movement and the June Struggle, which play significant parts in the course of the upcoming drama.
She The People released a similar report, detailing how the controversies surrounding Snowdrop began. The allegations and speculations came after netizens accessed a leak of the show's incomplete script.
Prior to the controversial leakage, though, many Korean dramas have already pulled out their contracts from their respective networks, and vice versa, due to the same issues of alleged historical distortion. These materials include SBS' Joseon Exorcist and Mr Queen.
Reports said that netizens are very keen on the leaked script of Snowdrop because it utilizes the issues that the Democratic Movement faced in the 80s. At that time, several student protestors were "killed and tortured while being accused as North Korean spies."
Moreover, the massacre remains to be a painful memory among many South Korean citizens. Accordingly, Snowdrop sourcing its entire course from these historical events is what, reportedly, caused the heavy opposition towards the series.
Following the debacle, JTBC released an official statement, explaining their side. As noted, Snowdrop is a "black comedy that satirizes the presidential political situation" in the 1980s.
The announcement continued that the upcoming series is a "melodrama of young men and women who are sacrificed in the whirlwind" of the era. Moreover, JTBC emphasized that the ongoing controversy "has nothing to do with the content" of the material.
In the end, the network asked the public to "refrain from indiscriminate criticism of the unreleased drama." However, netizens, especially the fan union, did not find the statement satisfactory, causing them to call for the cancellation, according to AllKpop.
