Attack on Titan manga series officially came to an end last month after more than a decade of serialization. Though some gladly accepted its conclusion, others didn't like how things ended for Eren, Mikasa, and other major characters.
Hajime Isayama has finally broken his silence and talked about the Attack on Titan manga ending to address the backlash. Despite putting his everything to give the series a proper finale, he acknowledged the fans' ire and revealed what could have gone wrong.
In an interview with Kodansha, as posted by Twitter user Attack on Fans, he admitted he hadn't fully expressed his message in the manga as he wanted. He said the climax was a complicated theme for him to draw.
So, he now felt sorry that he hadn't done it correctly. The manga creator thought he would please everyone with the manga's ending, but some felt disappointed, so he apologized.
By the looks of it, Isayama heard everyone's criticism and fans seemed to be not ready yet to see Attack on Titan manga's ending. According to Comicbook, though most fan-favorite characters survived, it might not be the finale the readers wanted to see.
Mikasa and Eren were the ones who suffered the most. Eren died due to the evil deeds he did, while Mikasa lived in isolation after killing the man she loved.
As it didn't end with a happy note, fans seemed to complain. They might have started going downward spiral in the scene where Eren and Armin had a discussion that led to the series' final pages.
Here, Armin thanked Eren for turning into a mass murderer to save humanity, which seemed not to resonate with what exactly Isayama wanted to convey. The manga artist cleared that Armin didn't approve of his best friends' bloody moves and actions--not even the creator.
As he saw how fans reacted to this particular event, he realized the message was unclear and immature. To clear things out, Isayama revealed there would be more pages coming to the Attack on Titan final chapter with its special re-release later this year.
He revealed Bessatsu Shonen Magazine put a limit on the number of pages he could add into the final chapter, totaling only 51. So, he is now planning to add new materials to correct his mistake and make everyone understand how he really wants Attack on Titan manga to end.
