Nathan's (Kevin McGarry) storyline is in question in When Calls the Heart season 9. Initially, it was believed that Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) will choose the Mountie over the businessman, Lucas (Chris McNally). But, in a shocking twist, she chose the latter and sealed their relationship with a kiss.
Because of Elizabeth's decision, Nathan's fate is hanging up in the air in When Calls the Heart season 9. He's now heartbroken as the woman he loves finally realized who she wants to be with -- and that's on Lucas's side. The two are moving forward with their relationship in the next outing.
For Nathan, it looks like he will still stay in Hope Valley even though Elizabeth didn't choose him. However, there are uncertainties surrounding his storyline, especially since he spent most of his time trying to win the heart of Krakow's character.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, McGarry discussed what's next for his character in When Calls the Heart season 9. The actor is hoping that Nathan will have some sort of "redemption story," wherein he will try to build himself back and move on.
McGarry also teased that "there should be a little bit of mourning" at the start of the next installment, something Nathan must go through. The good news is that his character remains in Hope Valley despite the rejection and pain he's feeling.
The early run of the new season could see Nathan trying to figure out how to cope with his heartbreak. While he gladly accepted Elizabeth's decision, a part of him is still hoping for a chance. Aside from his romantic life, more personal storylines are likely coming for him.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth and Lucas' relationship will start to progress in When Calls the Heart season 9. Both Krakow and McNally were intrigued by how their characters move forward as a couple. There's going to be a lot of romance for them, something that wasn't often shown in the past.
In another interview with the aforementioned outlet, Krakow teased that Lucas will wear more casual clothes in the next outing. He'll be dressing a bit differently this time around, which fans have been requesting to see. Since he is a businessman, he usually wears formal attire.
McNally, on the other hand, said that he has no idea what the new season will look like since he hasn't talked to showrunner John Tinker as of yet. But, the actor hopes that Lucas will encounter some problems in his business and will encounter financial challenges.
When Calls the Heart season 9 is set to premiere at some point in 2022.
