Salma Hayek, Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds' new movie "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" became a box office hit after earning $11.6 million on its debut in more than 3,330 theaters across the U.S. this past weekend.

The sequel to the 2017 action comedy film, "The Hitman's Bodyguard," has now grossed $17 million - surpassing Paramount's "A Quiet Place Part II." The sequel to the 2018 film was down to second place - receiving $9.4 million from 3,401 theaters and showing a 22% drop after a week.

With its four-week stay in the theaters, the Emily Blunt movie has made $125 million to date, but that was just in the U.S. alone. Internationally, it earned another $15.7 million over the weekend with $96.7 million - making its worldwide tally $221.9 million.

Could "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" match its success? According to Variety, the film had no competition in North America.

The movie had a $70 million budget - excluding marketing. So, it has to stay longer in theaters to return the profit.

However, as Universal's "F9" featuring Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez and more is about to hit cinemas next weekend, "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" may find it hard. The new installment to the "Fast and the Furious" franchise targets the same audience the John Krasinksi-directed movie has - mostly older men.

"The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" is one of few movies that has successfully made its way to the theaters since the Covid-19 pandemic. "Godzilla Versus Kong," alternatively, became the second pandemic film that crossed $100 million after earning $442.5 million worldwide, The Associated Press reported.

Talking about "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard," Ars Technica reported Reynolds had found his "true cinematic niche."

The first film earned $176.6 million worldwide. It received mixed reviews from critics and fans. Many questioned its script.
