"This is clearly not sustainable...with the currently projected vaccine supply for the next few months, the maximum daily achievable rate is 4 million to 5 million a day," Chandrakant Lahariya, an expert in public policy and health systems, told Reuters.
In Malaysia, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the hoarding of vaccines by industrialised nations was immoral and "had fallen short of respectable and responsible global leadership."
"We call for vaccine equity now and in the future. That's the only way we're going to emerge from this pandemic and future pandemic," Jamaluddin said, according to New Straits Times.
In Japan, the government has topped the 1 million doses given on a single day, meeting Prime Minister Yoshihide Saga's target as the vaccination campaign moves ahead of the political pressure of the Tokyo Olympics and a general election, Bloomberg said.
In Singapore, at least two private health care institutions are considering getting more vaccines, including China's Sinopharm and Sinovac shots, after an increase in demand for non-mRNA vaccines.
Over in Thailand, a record 51 deaths and 3,174 new infections were reported over the past 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry said Wednesday morning.
