After an alleged victim accused Chinese-Canadian actor and singer Kris Wu of rape earlier this month, the fallout has been swift and severe.

It's been the talk of the entire Asian community, and while the facts about this shocking tale have been established, rumors co-exist, sending fans and anti-fans into a heated debate.

Kris Wu Scandal: Facts vs. Rumors

Here's what we know so far about the former EXO member's arrest.

Facts

1. Wu was detained after Du Meizhu, a 19-year-old student, accused him of raping her when she was 17 years old.

As a result of the statement, Wu received a lot of backlash on Chinese social media, and several luxury brands dropped him as a partner.

Wu was "criminally detained" on suspicion of rape "in response to relevant information reported on the internet," Beijing police said in a statement, claiming that he "repeatedly lured young women into sexual relations."

2. Wu's sponsors have been bailing out.

More than a dozen companies have terminated connections with Wu, including major brands Louis Vuitton and Porsche, and there have been calls for him to quit the entertainment business and China.

3. Wu's fans have been silenced on Weibo, China's Twitter-like platform.

Weibo, where Wu had over 51 million followers, shut down hundreds of online groups created by Wu's fans and suspended almost 1,000 other accounts for making "misleading," "irrational," or "extreme" remarks regarding the case, Weibo said.

Rumors

1. Wu allegedly had intercourse with a minor.

The nail in the coffin, according to a screenshot of a widely circulated WeChat conversation from a source close to the case, was that one of Wu's victims was only 13 years old. In China, the legal age of consent is 14.

2. Wu's arrest has something to do with illegal drugs.

Official social media accounts of China's National Narcotics Control Commission (NNCC) posted the news immediately after it was published, prompting speculation that the detention was related to Wu's alleged drug use.

What Will Happen to Kris Wu?

Lawyers informed the state-run Global Times that if convicted, Wu would serve his sentence in China before being deported. An attorney from the Beijing Lanpeng Law Firm informed the media on Sunday that he might face ten years to life in prison.

Wu's alleged predatory behavior has been the subject of rumors for years: In 2016, he was entangled in a scandal after a 19-year-old influencer claimed Wu had ghosted her after months of dating and had used her for sex while hooking up with other women.
