Some 400 employees from one of Michigan's most comprehensive healthcare systems resigned from their positions rather than receive the COVID-19 vaccine, according to an article published by the Detroit News.

FOX 2 Detroit reported that the Henry Ford Health System disclosed Tuesday around 1% of its workers had quit their jobs at the hospital because of the facility's requirement to administer a coronavirus vaccine.

Religious or medical exemptions from the vaccine were granted to another 1,900 people, accounting for approximately 6% of the workforce. According to the study, Henry Ford Hospital was the first medical system in Michigan to require the vaccinations.

They can reapply for a position at Henry Ford if they have "a change of heart and become immunized," as the team members who quit, did. In the words of Bob Riney, President of Healthcare Operations and chief operating officer: "We are doing everything in our power to keep those doors open."

President Joe Biden's administration introduced vaccine regulations for the majority of hospitals across the country, as well as weekly testing for staff who choose not to receive the vaccine.

Despite this, not all hospitals have implemented a mandate, a research showed. Employers across the country are concerned that enforcing vaccine regulations will exacerbate already difficult working circumstances in pandemic hospitals, which are already understaffed.

On June 29, Henry Ford became the first health system in Michigan to declare a need for vaccinations for its employees. At the time of the announcement, 68% of the employees had been immunized against the virus. The requirement became effective on September 10.

According to state data, as of October 6, there are 1,769 adults in Michigan who have been confirmed positive for COVID-19.

"When everything is taken into account, we are losing a relatively minor segment of our staff," Bob Riney, the chief operating officer of the five-hospital system, said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Riney stated that there were a few more employees whose vaccine-related difficulties had not been resolved as of Tuesday.

Health care is not the only industry experiencing workforce challenges as a result of vaccine regulations -- but the rules for getting the shot put them in a difficult position as a result of manpower shortages meeting a high demand owing to the Delta variant's rise.
