At WWDC 2022, Apple's annual developer conference, iOS 16, Apple's next major iPhone operating system, made a tremendous splash. You may edit texts you've already sent in the Messages app with iOS 16, and you'll gain additional tools to personalize your iPhone, such as the ability to adjust the design of your lock screen and new privacy features for individuals in abusive situations.

All of this adds up to an iOS that appears to be new and modern on paper. iOS 16 is expected to be released in September, along with the much-rumored iPhone 14, and will be compatible with iPhone 8 and later.

Edit and 'unsend' messages

"Embarrassing typos are a thing of the past," Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi said.

First and foremost, in iOS 16, you will be able to edit sent messages. So, if you find a typo after sending a message, you'll be able to fix it later. Under the message, a little "edited" appears in the status.

Following that, you can immediately recall a sent message. If you sent an unfinished message by accident, you can use the Undo Send function to prevent it from being read and, perhaps, appear less chaotic to your friends and family.

Finally, messages and threads can be marked as unread. This could be a useful tool if you don't have time to answer a message right away but want to ensure you return to it later.

Customizable lock screen

The lock screen is one of the first things you see when you open your iPhone, especially if it has Face ID. The iPhone's lock screen gets the most significant improvement yet with iOS 16. To edit your lock screen, press and hold and scroll through the various chevalier styles.

Each design alters the background photo's color filter as well as the font on the lock screen to ensure that everything matches. This appears to be Apple's version of Google's Material You, which debuted with Android 12.

You may also change the typefaces for the time and date, as well as add lock screen widgets such as temperature, activity rings, and a calendar. The widgets function similarly to complications on the Apple Watch lock screen.

Safety Check

Safety Check is a new service that is designed to assist those who are in abusive relationships. On an iPhone, it allows you to check and reset who has access to location information, passwords, messages, and other iPhone apps.
