Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has often been compared to the late Princess Diana, a beloved figure in the British royal family. However, recent discussions suggest that while Meghan may have aspired to be seen in the same light as Diana, many critics and royal insiders believe the comparison doesn't quite align.
David Mellor, an ex-Tory minister, recently shared his views on Meghan's appearance at the Invictus Games. He expressed skepticism about Meghan's desire to be perceived similarly to Princess Diana, especially given her current standing in the U.K. "She always thought that she could drift into the royal family and become the new Princess Diana. All she would have to do is doll herself up and smile to the camera," Mellor remarked during a GB News appearance, highlighting a perceived disparity between Meghan's aspirations and public perception.
This sentiment isn't isolated. Tom Bower, in his book "Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors," discussed the reactions of Diana's siblings upon meeting Prince Harry's bride. According to Bower, not only did Diana's family - including Earl Charles Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and Baroness Jane Fellowes - fail to see the similarities between Meghan and their late sister, but they also expressed concerns about Meghan's fit within the royal establishment.
Prince Harry, on the other hand, has often drawn parallels between his wife and his late mother. In the documentary "Harry & Meghan," the Duke of Sussex emphasized the shared traits between the two women. "So much of what Meghan is, and how she is, is so similar to my mum," Harry noted. He went on to describe both women as compassionate, empathetic, confident, and warm. "My mom made most of her decisions, if not all of them, from her heart, and I am my mother's son," he added.
However, Bower's writings suggest that Harry's attempts to align Meghan's image with that of his mother's legacy met with resistance even within his family. The royal biographer mentioned that Harry was "disappointed" when his family and close friends did not see Meghan in the same light as Diana. Bower wrote, "No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend. More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the royal family."
The ongoing discussions and debates surrounding Meghan's place within the royal family and her aspirations to be seen as a figure reminiscent of Princess Diana highlight the complexities of royal dynamics and public perception. As the Sussexes continue to carve out their path, the world watches with keen interest, drawing comparisons, and forming opinions on every move.
