In a candid revelation, John Stamos, the renowned actor from "Full House," has opened up about the emotional aftermath of his divorce from model and actress Rebecca Romijn. Their separation, which culminated in 2005 after seven years of togetherness, was a tumultuous period for Stamos, marked by intense personal anguish and the weight of public scrutiny.
In his forthcoming memoir, "If You Would Have Told Me," set to release on October 24, Stamos provides an intimate account of his relationship with Romijn, detailing the highs and lows of their love story and the subsequent challenges of their early 2000s divorce. Speaking exclusively to People, Stamos expressed, "My first marriage was shattering to me. I was shattered for way too long, too." He further admitted that during the divorce, he perceived Romijn as "the Devil," a sentiment that consumed him for years.
The public nature of their breakup exacerbated Stamos's distress. He felt humiliated by the widespread perception that Romijn had moved on due to her flourishing career, while his seemed to be in a lull. "It was very much the opinion that she dumped me because her career was going great and mine wasn't, and that's humiliating," he shared. However, with time and introspection, Stamos recognized his role in the end of their relationship, stating, "Maybe I was as much to blame as her."
The aftermath of the divorce saw Stamos grappling with alcohol, a coping mechanism he later abandoned. Reflecting on this period, he mentioned, "That's when I really started to kind of drink a lot." Yet, he believes this challenging phase paved the way for him to find true love. "But without that, I never would've known what a real love is, and I would've never straightened up to get someone like Caitlin in my life," he said.
Stamos found love again with Caitlin McHugh, whom he married in 2018. The couple is now proud parents to their 5-year-old son, Billy. Romijn, on the other hand, has also moved forward in her personal life. She married actor Jerry O'Connell in 2007, and the couple is blessed with twin daughters.
Stamos's memoir promises to offer readers a candid look into his life, his struggles, and his journey to find love and contentment once more. As he aptly puts it, "If I didn't go through all the things, all the heartache, I wouldn't be who I am today."
