Since the release of Prince Harry's explosive memoir Spare nearly two years ago, the question on many minds is whether Meghan Markle will follow suit with her own tell-all book. As Harry's memoir detailed his strained relationships with King Charles and Prince William, and provided insight into the couple's decision to step back from royal duties, industry insiders speculate that Meghan could be offered millions to officially share her side of the story.
Hints of a potential memoir have been building over time, particularly following a controversial interview Meghan gave to The Cut in August 2022, just days before the death of Queen Elizabeth II. During the interview, Meghan revealed that she did not sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) when she and Harry exited their royal roles in 2020, suggesting that she could, at some point, speak more freely about her experiences.
The most striking moment from that interview was Meghan's reference to rediscovering a journal she kept while living at Frogmore Cottage, their former home in the UK, during a visit to the UK for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Meghan described how she opened drawers in the cottage and found the journal, sparking curiosity about its contents and whether it might serve as the basis for a future memoir. "You go back and you open drawers and you're like, 'Oh my gosh. This is what I was writing in my journal there,'" she said at the time.
Royal commentators believe that this mention of the journal is no accident. Roya Nikkhah, the Sunday Times Royal Editor, commented on True Royalty TV's The Royal Beat, saying that Meghan's words in the interview were highly suggestive. "The thinly veiled threats that came in [Meghan's interview with The Cut]... I think [she] probably hopes it does [feel threatening] to the Royal Family," Nikkhah noted.
She also remarked that Meghan's revelation about keeping a journal raised strong inferences that she could be considering writing a book. Nikkhah added, "That phrase, 'I have a lot to say until I don't' and, 'I've never signed anything that restricts me from talking,' was a very strong inference."
Meghan's journal is not a new discovery. She has referenced it several times over the last few years, leading to ongoing speculation that she may, at some point, choose to write her own memoir. This growing anticipation comes as Meghan has recently taken a step back from the public spotlight, while Harry has continued with solo engagements in New York, London, and Africa.
PR expert Mark Borkowski suggests that Meghan's absence from Harry's recent public appearances is part of a strategic separation of their work. Speaking to The Telegraph, Borkowski noted that their decision to pursue individual projects stems from the realization that their combined "star power" as a couple did not generate the impact they had anticipated when they left their royal roles. "They had to change the narrative," Borkowski explained. "They need a venture that deflects from the failures. The charity aspect impresses upon everybody that [Harry] does have value beyond the controversial stuff."
Borkowski's insight aligns with Harry's recent engagements focusing on charity and advocacy, which have allowed him to carve out a space beyond the media controversies surrounding the Sussexes. "It has the effect of separating them from the bad press and the failed content ideas. The punters still have time for Harry," Borkowski added.
