Jennifer Aniston was at home when an intruder in his 70s rammed a vehicle through the front gate of her $21 million Bel-Air estate on May 5, prompting an emergency response from her security team and local authorities. The suspect, who was detained at gunpoint by Aniston's private security, was later taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department and is expected to be charged with felony vandalism.
LAPD spokesperson Officer Jeff Lee confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 12:20 p.m. Pacific Time, describing it as a "burglary suspect" who "ran his vehicle through the gate to the residence." He noted that Aniston was inside the home at the time of the breach but did not have direct contact with the suspect and was not physically harmed.
"The resident was home at the time," said an LAPD public information officer. "There was a security guard on the premises who was able to detain that suspect until officers arrived, at which time they took him into custody without incident."
Initial reports suggest the man may not have been targeting Aniston specifically. Authorities are investigating whether the crash was intentional or the result of an accident. Sources close to the investigation said the collision did not appear to be accidental and that the suspect, who complained of back pain, was evaluated and transported to a hospital.
The LAPD's Threat Management Unit, which has handled previous cases involving Aniston, is now overseeing the investigation "out of an abundance of caution." Investigators are reviewing the man's background and examining his social media activity. He reportedly has a minor criminal record.
Aniston's representatives have not commented on the incident.
The 8,500-square-foot mid-century modern home, designed by renowned architect Quincy Jones and completed in 1965, was purchased by Aniston in 2011 for $21 million. The estate includes four bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms, a wine cellar, a guesthouse, and sweeping city and ocean views across nearly two acres. It was also the site of her 2015 wedding to actor Justin Theroux.
In 2018, Aniston told Architectural Digest about the extensive renovations she made to the home. "I'm all about cozy. S--- is important, but comfort is essential," she said. "Every corner you turn, you have an experience. Everywhere you look, you get a vista."
Aniston and Theroux separated in 2018 but maintained a friendship post-divorce. "We are two best friends who have decided to part ways as a couple," they said in a joint statement at the time. Theroux later told Esquire, "We can not be together and still bring each other joy and friendship."
