George Clooney has pushed back against speculation that he is abandoning Los Angeles, even as reports describe a marriage to Amal Alamuddin increasingly defined by parallel lives across continents. The actor's comments come amid renewed scrutiny of the couple's globe-spanning routine, which divides time between rural France and properties in the United States and Europe.
At 64, Clooney confirmed that he no longer lives full-time in the Studio City house he owned since 1995, a disclosure that set off a fresh round of rumors about the state of his marriage. Married since 2014, the couple now share French citizenship and maintain homes in France, Italy, England, New York and Kentucky, according to people familiar with their arrangements.
Clooney rejected the idea that the move signaled a permanent departure from California. "No!" he said when asked whether he was leaving Los Angeles for good. Explaining the decision, he added: "I've been there in that house for 30 years, and it was time to move. We got a place about four years ago in France, and we spent a good amount of time there, enjoying it."
He emphasized that Los Angeles remains central to his identity. "But L.A.'s still a big part of home for me too because it's where I found success. It's where I made all my friends. I know every back street. I know all the shortcuts," Clooney said, reflecting on a city he credits with shaping his career.
France, he noted, offers something different for the couple's eight-year-old twins. "There's an anonymity living there. That's good for the kids," Clooney said. He contrasted that with Hollywood's glare, adding that in France, "they kind of don't give a s--- about fame."
Behind the public defense, people close to the family describe a more compartmentalized reality. One source told RadarOnline.com: "They are committed parents and remain respectful partners, but they are no longer glued to each other by any means." Another said professional priorities have pulled them in different directions, noting that Alamuddin's work is largely Europe-based while Clooney's career continues to orbit Los Angeles.
A separate source framed the arrangement in starker terms: "From the outside it looks idyllic, farms, privacy, multiple homes, but the reality is George and Amal are often in different places, focused on different worlds." The same person added that this dynamic is why those close to the couple describe them as "leading separate lives," with some speculating that a divorce "could soon be on the way."
Clooney has previously spoken candidly about raising children away from Hollywood. "We're very lucky. You know, we live on a farm in France," he said, recalling his own upbringing. "But now, for them, it's like, they're not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life."
Others close to the couple caution against reading the geography as a rupture. "This isn't about a dramatic split," one source said. "It's about two powerful people choosing autonomy, even within a marriage."
