Donald Trump is facing renewed criticism after invoking Abraham Lincoln while responding to questions about recent assassination threats, including a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in Washington, D.C. that triggered a major security response.
The remarks came during an exchange with Peter Doocy, who asked Trump directly: "Respectfully, why do you think this keeps happening to you?" The question followed heightened concerns after the disruption at the Washington Hilton, where gunfire prompted Secret Service intervention.
Trump responded by placing the threats in historical context. "Well, you know, I've studied assassinations. And I must tell you the most impactful people, the people that do the most," he said. "You take a look at Abraham Lincoln....the people that make the biggest impact, they're the ones that they go after."
He continued by linking the comparison to his own presidency. "I hate to say I'm honoured by that, but I've done a lot," Trump said. "We've changed this country, and there are a lot of people who are not happy about that. So I think that's the answer."
Trump also addressed the personal dimension of ongoing security threats. "I lead a pretty normal life, considering, you know, it's a dangerous life," he said, before adding: "A lot of other people, you know, you read stories where they become basket cases. To be honest, I'm not a basket case."
The comparison to Lincoln, who was assassinated in 1865 at the end of the Civil War, quickly became the focal point of public reaction. Critics argued that invoking one of the most consequential political assassinations in American history risked overstating contemporary threats and blurring historical context.
