Apple Inc. may be preparing one of the most significant changes to its iPhone release strategy in more than a decade, with reports suggesting the company could delay the launch of its standard iPhone 18 until spring 2027 while giving priority to its highest-end devices, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and a long-rumored foldable iPhone.

According to reports from Nikkei Asia and comments from Apple supply-chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the technology giant is considering a staggered launch schedule that would separate its premium and mainstream smartphones into two distinct release windows. If implemented, the move would break from Apple's longstanding practice of unveiling its entire flagship iPhone lineup during a single autumn event.

Under the reported timeline, Apple would launch its premium devices in late 2026, while the base iPhone 18 would not arrive until several months later. Neither Apple nor its executives have publicly confirmed the reports, but the prospect has already fueled debate among analysts about whether the company is reshaping its strategy around higher-margin products.

The shift would come as Apple continues to expand the gap between its standard and Pro-tier devices. In recent years, premium iPhones have increasingly received exclusive features, including advanced camera systems, higher refresh-rate displays and more powerful processors before those technologies gradually reach lower-priced models.

Analysts say a staggered release structure could serve several purposes simultaneously. By separating launch dates, Apple could extend the marketing cycle for its most expensive products and reduce competition between its own devices during the crucial holiday shopping season.

The reported plan also arrives as Apple faces growing supply-chain pressures linked to next-generation components. Industry reports indicate that advanced memory modules and manufacturing capacity for cutting-edge chips remain constrained, making production planning increasingly complex for flagship devices.

If the reports prove accurate, Apple's 2026 premium lineup could include:

  •  iPhone 18 Pro
  •  iPhone 18 Pro Max
  •  Apple's first foldable iPhone

Those devices would reportedly headline the company's traditional September launch event, while the standard iPhone 18 would follow in early 2027.

Despite the potential delay, reports suggest the base iPhone 18 could still receive substantial upgrades. Industry leaks point to Apple's next-generation A20 processor, which is expected to be manufactured using a 2-nanometer process. The device is also rumored to feature up to 12GB of RAM, a larger OLED display with ProMotion technology and storage configurations reaching 1TB.

Camera improvements are also expected. Reports indicate Apple may equip the standard model with a dual 48-megapixel camera system, while reserving more advanced imaging features for Pro variants. The company is also believed to be exploring methods to shrink the Dynamic Island through under-display sensor technology.
